Jaime Peters I was robbed. So I decided to save the planet.

Recently, I decided to move back to NY from New Orleans where I’d been helping with the recovery effort. While I enjoyed the work I was doing, New Orleans just wasn’t my home. What can I say? I’m a New Yorker. So I looked for some job opportunities, made some phone calls and scheduled some interviews. Then I packed two suitcases and my dog into my car and drive to New York. Of course I broke down in Harrisonburg, VA. It’s approximately 7 hours from my parent’s home on Long Island where I was he… Continue

Karen Abdul House Democrats roll out Health Care Bill

Today marked a huge milestone for the House Democrats as they unveiled the Health Care bill. For the last several months, the debate of health care reform has been ugly and brutal. Both parties have had a lot to say and many have provided false information to their constituents making the debate even uglier. Let me be real America, I am very happy that we are going to possibly have some sort of health care bill that will insure the uninsured. My mother is one of those uninsured. In 2007, her com… Continue

Laura Davis Thank you goes a long way

The more I do this job, the more it is clear to me that people really just want to be thanked and recognized for their hard work. Tonight we passed our 2010 county budget, which at times was contentious and divisive. It was nice to see that some of my fellow commissioners took the time to thank the county staff. The staff often does a thankless job, researching our ideas and bringing resolutions to us repeatedly due to little "tweaks" we request. It has to be frustrating. The upside is that if t… Continue

Julie Vruggink Oct. 21

Today a friend of mine and I were talking about how many changes are required within the legal system in Michigan and the nation. Granted neither of us had really thought about things are the level we do now after the events of the last couple years. But today, we both decided it is time to start making changes where we can. We have both studied human services, worked as volunteers or employees for special needs populations and through our network have seen where the legal system is failing many… Continue

Karen Abdul Are term limits needed in Congress?

Why have our politicians and politics changed over the years? When did we stop learning to dialogue with one another on political issues without feeling fear or hatred from the other party, and when did politicians care more about getting re-elected than truly working for the welfare of their constituents? Over the years, it would seem that politics has changed, but in many ways it remains the same. We have the same leaders who continue to speak about the same issues every election year, along… Continue

Victoria FittsMilgrim Opportunity to Come Home to Yourself

Today I was listening to an old Bonnie Raitt song – it starts: “These men that I’ve been seeing, Got their soul up on a shelf…” Actually it’s a Chris Smithers song and I’ve known it for almost 30 years! Yikes, I’m dating myself there. Anyway, I couldn’t get that line out of my head --- soul up on the shelf. Forget the men – I work with many women who put their soul up on a shelf many moons ago and are longing to find it again. It’s fascinating to me how that happens and then there’s this… Continue

Laura Davis Grace for President--where are the girls?

Today is my birthday, and I got to be the "mystery reader" in my son's 3rd grade class. I read them "Grace For President". It features a little girl who asks the teacher why there are no girl presidents, which spurs a race for class president. In the end she wins by a very narrow margin. My son brought home 20 thank you notes from his classmates. My favorites were: My favorite part of the story was when she won the election. My favorite part of the story was when she asked where the girls were… Continue

Laura Davis finding ways to say YES

Just watched this 12 yr old girl speak truth to power (from 1992). I want to know where she is today, and how I can vote for her!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQmz6Rbpnu0 I saw Ruben Gonzales, 3 time Olympian luge athlete, give a very inspirational speech last night at a Cesar Chavez awards dinner. He told his story, which is the story of anyone who has ever become great. He wasn't born great. Not everyone believed in him. His high school soccer coach told him he was only allowed off the b… Continue

Laura Davis Learning to bounce back better & smarter

I was inspired recently by an unusual source: fitness magazine. Seriously, you can stop laughing. This was a particularly challenging week in which I learned not to be so trusting, and that anything I say can be misquoted and tweeted before I finish a sentence. I was called a scumbag, turncoat, puppet, hero, fighter, advocate and leader above the rest--all from people within my own party! ha ha ha At the end of the day, I know I have worked my tail off for my district, and that is what matters… Continue

Stacy Bayton What getting healthy means to me

I have always considered myself to be a health conscious gal, but never before had I thought about a lot of the things associated with being healthy until I purchased P90X. I have never been a super skinny girl, but I have never considered myself overweight either. A great deal of my body is solid muscle, but there are spots that are "soft" and as I age I struggle with the weight I carry around my hips and belly, especially after the birth of our fourth child. As I was taking my weight and measu… Continue

Laura Davis Not a quitter, not even close!

Honestly, I have to vent. I have been a "rookie" elected person for 9 months now. It has not been easy, especially in this economy. I have wanted to quit on more than one occasion. But that would be irresponsible at the very least. In recent months I have seen more than one person quit in one form or another: resign to be with family, retire early to save the budget, resign due to relocation in another district, you name it. I am sure they are all fine reasons, and they are nice enough people.… Continue

As a campus safety advocate it hurts me to see the case of missing Yale graduate student Annie Le. I hope that her family can find justice and peace. It is important for all us to realize that even on a prestigious campus as Yale no one is safe. Crime can happen any where, any time, and to anyone. My prayers are for her and for her family. Kelly Clayton This is how I handled my thesis writing

It was such an embarrassing situation for me when I had to finish my thesis writing and I was not getting enough time to understand thesis paper writing guidelines, and I wasn’t getting enough thesis writing help. It was torturing to see others celebrating the success of their PhD thesis leaving me behind. Well, I never lost hope and I once thought of getting my thesis paper written by online thesis… Continue

Stacy Bayton Our Health Care Scam

As we see the health care issue finally take center stage in the political arena, I feel a great deal more fear than I do relief. Let's face it, I do not think there is one person out there today that says the health care in our country is working for everyone. There are a great deal of issues...the greatest of which to me is that we have a large percentage of our citizens who remain uncovered, and secondly that the coverage a great number of people have is a joke that covers little to nothing o… Continue
