Checking things off the list...

I've gotten into the habit of making a list of things to do each day. Everything from the general upkeep types of goals (Clean room, do laundry, return xyz to the store...) to work goals (download music for audition, call recording studio and get prices, look up scholarship info...).

I feel like I've been really busy lately but still haven't seen any financial return. I know that what I need to do is regroup my thoughts and emotions and focus them more on believing that my efforts will start ma… Continue

I Passed!!

I passed the written exam portion of my Wellcoach Exam!! One section left to go - the easy one! Turning in 4 weeks worth of written goals for my practice clients. Easy peasy!

But, of course, no rest until I'm dead! Up next, the ACSM Personal Trainer Exam! This one is a bit intimidating. I looked through the books and discovered a lot of math. Math was never my strong suit, but I feel confident that, because my new roommate was a math major in college, I will have all the help I need to learn th… Continue

Study, Study, Study.

I've been away from home for the past 4 days on what I'm calling my "April Audition Tour." In addition to wellness, I'm also a working actress. This month, I'm auditioning for theater companies in Massachusetts and Washington, DC. Today, I'm writing from beautiful Williamstown, MA in the Berkshires where my cousins have graciously allowed me to stay in their home while they are away for the weekend.

I could have stayed with my parents closer to Boston. A fellow actress, comedian and friend of m… Continue

The Scholarship Hunt

The world is an amazingly small place, made even smaller by this community. And I am grateful. Over the past two days, after being inspired and connected by WHP member Suzanna Quintana, I have finally found a heath and nutrition certification program that I fully believe to be the one for me. I have decided to register for the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. I am THRILLED and can't thank Suzanna enough for being my guide to this next step in my journey.

I've spent the last 24 hours scourin… Continue

Making Lemonade

If you watch the news, it seems inarguable that this is not the time to be out of a job. However, each day more and more of us find ourselves out of work. This year I've "lost" two of three jobs. I put the word "lost" in quotations because my situation is somewhat unique. Let me start with a description of my jobs and go from there.

My primary income is from Walt Disney World. I worked there as a performer, full time, for the past 2.5 years. I was under contract through Actor's Equity Associati… Continue

In 100 words or less tell us how you are a leader
I have developed a website for young women that strives to change the current paradigm of beauty - http://www.truebelle.com. This website makes use of all internet mediums from written blogs, articles and message boards to podcasts and web videos to spread the message that a “True Belle” or true beauty is a woman who wants to be healthy physically, mentally and spiritually. The key lies not in some miracle method, but in finding the desire to always learn, research and soul search and then, based on the learning, to change and improve the treatment of the body, mind and spirit each and every day.

My dear friend and fellow performer, Annie, has started an amazing foundation to help families adopt children in need. She and her husband are currently fundraising for both the foundation and their own adoption. They are amazing people and deserve lots of support!! Please look at their blog.

It was great to hear from you Laura! I know exactly the position you are in of trying to figure out what to do with your interest in wellness and nutrition, and I've got 3 words for you that will change your life! Institute of Integrative Nutrition. Go to my website at www.suzannaquintana.com and click on the box that says "learn about my education". I have a feeling this is just up your alley! I had thought for years that I'd go back to school and get my Masters in Nutrition but something kept holding me back, Thank God! Because this school was the answer to all my prayers, and my life is so much the better because of it. Check it out today! And tell them I sent you for special discounts if you decide to enroll. Let me know!

It can be...the point to the group was to offer women the opportunity to mile and exchange ideas and help one another along...at the same time we have a member we mentor for 30 days and help them set and reach defined goals. Where we could not get people to interact was on the personal level where we contact others who have strengths we want to improve in ourselves and need guidance. This is something that needs to be addressed...we want our members to be active not complacent. I am glad that someone came to you because that was the point and I am happy that it took in a sense.

What we will do differently this time is to catalog each members expertise/strengths so that we can look for help where we need it. I love being able to help others realize their dreams...to be a part of something that gives back is truly a blessed thing.

That is precisely what I mean. We formed Maximize for that purpose, but unfortunately not all the women in the group want to actually participate. We are regrouping and moving forward with those who want to take active participation. Glad to have you on board. I will put some things together for you all and get it out in the next few weeks. Take through Christmas to get it done and then we will reconvene the first Sunday in January.

Hope you are enjoying the Christmas holiday!

Hello Laura! I just wanted to pop on and see how things were going...I see you are just as busy as I am!

I would like to pool resources in Maxmize...are you interested? Like the rest of the women here I always have a lot I am working on and I need help now and then. I think we have the ability to help one another and would like to try and refresh Maximize to do just that.

Great things are ahead!

Hello, Laura!
I love your definition of beauty and a True Belle. I think you'd really love the line of dolls that I'm creating, changing notions of beauty to include cultural heritage, intelligence, body shape/size and power. I think girls need to know that ALL that figures into beauty too! Thanks for your great work! Christina

I love your vision. I am going to check out your website. I will be down in Florida the beginning of October. I am putting on an event in West Palm Beach which focuses on wellness and implementing proper nutrition into an individuals daily routine. If you know of anyone or if you can make it down I will get you the details. I look forward to being in contact with you. Blessings.

Thank you Laura! I hope you are doing well...let me know what is new with you. I have not had a chance to get on your site in a while, but I will check it out again today.

Take care and keep me updated on you! We will be adding a form online to the site where our members can apply for mentorship, so keep up with the group page and let us know if there is anything you need assistance with.

Hello Laura! I just wanted to see how you were doing. I have heard from a few of the ladies who have checked out the True Belle, and they loved it. Keep up the great work!

I also wanted to see what you thought about our first project in the Maximized mentorship program--Synergy boot camp. We have had little activity with this project and I wanted to get your opinion on the group, our purpose and the project.

Hope you are doing well! We just returned from vacation in Arizona and California and it was awesome. It is so humid here in Michigan that I would rather live in the dry hot weather than this drippy mess. My Aunt lives in Florida and she says it is humid there, but not the same as the northeast states. She likes it a lot better than Pennsylvania where we are all from. I hope you are enjoying your summer as well!

Take care and I look forward to hearing from you!

Thanks!

Is it really a glass ceiling or is it impenetrable Plexiglas? Is it a carefully fashioned allusion keeping us POC’s hopeful, making us believe we truly have access so we will stay in line? What has been your experience as a woman of color?
