publicly thanked 2 of the strong women on our county staff for their often thankless work.

I invite women every time I get the chance. I also say, "I don't care if you run against me, just get out there because we need women!"

I was transformed by the first Michigan Go Run-Whitehouse Project training. I was elected Nov. 2008 as Ingham County Commissioner, District 15--I won by 38 votes!!!! I am a full time student (MSU-James Madison), mother, wife and friend. I have worked as a preschool teacher, a nursing home aide and an intern for U.S. Senator Carl Levin--which has helped me become a great listener! I am a member of AAUW Lansing.

Thank you goes a long way

The more I do this job, the more it is clear to me that people really just want to be thanked and recognized for their hard work.
Tonight we passed our 2010 county budget, which at times was contentious and divisive. It was nice to see that some of my fellow commissioners took the time to thank the county staff. The staff often does a thankless job, researching our ideas and bringing resolutions to us repeatedly due to little "tweaks" we request. It has to be frustrating. The upside is that if t… Continue

Grace for President--where are the girls?

Today is my birthday, and I got to be the "mystery reader" in my son's 3rd grade class. I read them "Grace For President". It features a little girl who asks the teacher why there are no girl presidents, which spurs a race for class president. In the end she wins by a very narrow margin.

My son brought home 20 thank you notes from his classmates. My favorites were:

My favorite part of the story was when she won the election.
My favorite part of the story was when she asked where the girls were… Continue

finding ways to say YES

Just watched this 12 yr old girl speak truth to power (from 1992). I want to know where she is today, and how I can vote for her!!!

I saw Ruben Gonzales, 3 time Olympian luge athlete, give a very inspirational speech last night at a Cesar Chavez awards dinner. He told his story, which is the story of anyone who has ever become great. He wasn't born great. Not everyone believed in him. His high school soccer coach told him he was only allowed off the b… Continue

Learning to bounce back better & smarter

I was inspired recently by an unusual source: fitness magazine. Seriously, you can stop laughing.

This was a particularly challenging week in which I learned not to be so trusting, and that anything I say can be misquoted and tweeted before I finish a sentence. I was called a scumbag, turncoat, puppet, hero, fighter, advocate and leader above the rest--all from people within my own party! ha ha ha

At the end of the day, I know I have worked my tail off for my district, and that is what matters… Continue

Not a quitter, not even close!

Honestly, I have to vent. I have been a "rookie" elected person for 9 months now. It has not been easy, especially in this economy. I have wanted to quit on more than one occasion. But that would be irresponsible at the very least.

In recent months I have seen more than one person quit in one form or another: resign to be with family, retire early to save the budget, resign due to relocation in another district, you name it. I am sure they are all fine reasons, and they are nice enough people.… Continue

Hey! Sorry I did not get to speak with you a bit more yesterday...I went on a tour of the gardens and wanted to catch you after, but we missed one another.

It was very nice meeting you. I am sorry that your election is taking such a toll on you...I commend you for going after what you want, and I hope that things turn around as you continue on through the election. Every time you are faced with something negative just think of all the good that you will do when you are in office and all the people who will be better off because you took a stand and ran. I am a better person for knowing you and I am certain that those you represent will feel the same.

Keep your chin up lady...I know I am not that close to where you are, but if you need any help give me a holler and I will see what I can do. Stuff envelopes, whatever, just let me know.

Have truck...will travel...I will even bring my kids and irritate your opponents further!!!

Take care and I will talk to you soon!

I meant to ask you if you were going to be present at the Women's Equality Day event in Lansing...not sure how far that is from you. I am still relatively new to the Michigan area. I will be in attendance...looking forward to being a part of this event.

Let me know if you will be there as well. Take care and have a great day!

Hi Laura! I just saw your comment on the Power Mommies page. I think this is something we are all familiar with. I think it depends on the meeting itself. I have on occasion had to take my small ones to PTA meetings that are usually childless, but as the secretary I can't miss, so I keep a backpack full of toys in the car for each of my children for cases just like this. They play, and I get done what I needed to do. I have done the same for Girl Scout meetings and other meetings that deal with children. As for business, I would cancel and reschedule any meeting for my business or try to attend via phone in case you cannot cancel. It is simple enough to have my call placed on speakerphone and has gone well each time I have done it. Otherwise I would cancel.

Great to hear you are running for the seat of Commissioner in your county. It is awesome to see so many women in this network stepping up to run for some level of office. Such a great example for our young women and girls. Best of luck to you!

Laura - look at you women leaders! You've already started the MI Go Run group! Can you send me an invite to join? If it's ok with you, I'd like to invite the rest of the inaugural class alumni to join this group (rather than start a second group).
