In 100 words or less tell us how you are a leader
I am finishing up a grad degree in Appalachian Studies and I want to help preserve history by strengthening community, by promoting the traditional arts and encouraging the new outgrowths of that. I have been a piano teacher forever. I sing in a group called, "The Muses." I have four children and was a single mom for 10 years. I teach children's choir and compose and do water colors. I can do any thing that doesn't pay! HA! I am an Appalachian native. Both sides of my family have been in Western N.C. for several hundred years. I like to tell the old stories and sing the old ballads.
My dream would be to have a community center where the old ability to gather and hang out would be there. There wouldn't be a price for coming. The center would offer all kinds of classes that might have fees but there would be activities for the locals without any cost. We need community! I believe it is urgent to the health of our country and ultimately the world. A community center should represent the uniqueness of the community with all of its varied cultural roots.

Judy-Greetings! I have a client who has a non-profit center similiar to your dream. Mrs. Bolling started Aldine Youth, one of Houston's most economically challenged areas, out of the back seat of her car passing out meals and now she has a building on 5 acres of donated land! God is good! The center is a resource for the community which includes medical fairs, a resale shop, social services, field trips for families, parenting classes, etc. Their web site is www.aldineyouth.org.
