I am a writer and entrepreneur and I use both strengths to help address social and environmental challenges in the world. I've traveled to the Philippines as a Fulbright Scholar to study the effects of globalization on indigenous populations in the rice terraces, I've worked on farms to study organic agriculture, I've written essays on women's body issues, I've taught small business skills to the marginalized in Denver, and now my big topic of interest is how to save the world's honeybees.

Lovin' Lisa Simpson

It's official. Bees are now part of pop culture. Even Lisa Simpson has her eye on the disappearing bee population. The episode is wittily titled: "The Burns and the Bees," and--though I won't vouch for the bee science in the show--it's nice to see the bee awareness spreading into pop media. The plot? Basically, Mr. Burns decides to build a sports complex in the one place where the declining bee population is thriving, and ends up getting stung financially as a result. It's cute--not The Simpsons… Continue

Jumping the Gun on CCD

I just emailed Kim Flottum, editor of Bee Culture magazine and a wonderful blog on beekeeping in The Daily Green. I asked him about a book that came out this spring about Colony Collapse Disorder, titled A Spring Without Bees, by Michael Schacker. I found this book quite illuminating, especially because it pointed to a specific cause of CCD: An insecticide called Imadaclopri… Continue

The Bees won in Denver!

Want to know what I'm thankful for? I'm grateful for the Denver City Council passing legislation that allows Denver residents to keep bees in their backyards. This was the result of a recent snafu with a local resident who had a couple hives in her yard and was slapped with a $950 fine if she didn't remove her hives. (See previous post about it here.)

Although the proposal passed 10 to 2 in the council, there… Continue

I love the vision. The honeybees are important to protect. Einstein stated that when the honeybees are gone the food supply will follow. I would love to read some of your essays on women's body issues. I am also an entrepreneur in the field of wellness. My other passions are supplying alternative energy sources, getting clean water to all, I focus on finding solutions. Your passion for life and serving humanity comes across in your profile, I look forward to meeting you. Blessings.

Hello Jennie! I love what I do, and I am lucky for that. I stumbled into it actually when I was consulting for a company that produces natural and organic products...they were seeking investors, and I found my new calling.

I have been doing this for over five years now, and it is very fulfilling to clean up properties and make them healthier for humans, animals and our environment. I just wish that more people were interested in doing so...the hard cold fact is that few think that the chemicals they use in in and around their homes and on their bodies are hazardous enough to stop what they are doing. I guess if they did then we would not be needed to pave the way, but still, sometimes I feel like screaming hello common sense...sorry little venting goin on.

You have an impressive bio, sounds like you have had your share of fun. My daughter loves the fact that you are working to save the honeybees...we are a honey friendly family. If you have time please tell me what measures you are taking in this plight...and how others can get involved.

We are in the process of putting together our first website for the non profit company...bare bones, but something. When it is done I will send out the address for everyone to check it out. Trying to get more redevelopment projects going but need a new fiscal sponsor as our previous one retired. If you know of any companies that sponsor environmental educational projects please let me know. I am sifting through some now.

Thanks for getting back with me...we will have to get together sometime and take a look at everything we do...it is always nice to meet a fellow steward and who knows there may be something we can do together!

Talk to you soon-

Hello Jennie! I was excited to find you as I too am an environmental steward that works with farmers and commercial/residential property owners in the redevelopment of their land. Our redevelopment projects include stripping all chemical use from properties and implementing feeding programs that use natural and organic products and water conservation devices.

I would love to speak with you about your ventures. I am always looking for opportunities to network with other stewards to meet the environmental needs of today.

Hey girl! How are things going? How is Denver? I am so happy to have had the opportunity to meet you and get to know you. What decisions have you made about your project? What direction do you think you are headed in? I wish that we would have had more time on Sunday afternoon so that we would not have had to rush to the airport. Keep the fire alive, stay passionate, and keep sharing your fantastic message. Also, keep striving to tell others through your writing. I would love to read some of your work if you would be willing to share any of it. Take care and I look forward to hearing more of your amazing plans and work. GO GIRL!! I am so proud of you!

Thank you so much for your comments Jenny; it means the world to me. Every day I try to do my best to be the best person I can be but it can be challenging because it seems our world is shifting to the negative. I encourage my sons to truly be sensitive to people and our planet and truly thinking about what we do on a day to day basis that affects our communal environment.

Thank you for your work with Honey Bees. They are vital!
My sons and I decided to not trim back these horrible looking bushes that produce such beautiful pink flowers every year because the bees flock to them every spring/summer. My neighbors want me to keep my yard properly manicured just like theirs but I think it is important to simply watch--take a moment and examine how the bees or the birds or even butterflies are responding to what is going on in our environment and to help them in our own little way.
I think it is even the simplest effort that can ignite an incredibly positive chain reaction toward the positive in helping heal our very sick planet. Maybe we can try using less pesticides or even looking to what Mother Nature is telling us about natural responses or actions to bringing environmental balance—do you think? So yes--even with something as simple as allowing ugly bushes to flourish—to help our honey bees—we will do it--I promise.

Much love to you!

Hey, Jennie!
We never did get to finish our conversation about beekeeping in Guerneville. If you could suggest any resources, I'd be most grateful.
Happy blessings on your work with bees,
Christina

Women Rule!
Warmest welcome from a sister and friend,
Who will stand with you in spirit to the very end.
What a powerful witness you have to share,
So know that this sister will lift you up with prayers.
Be encouraged and hopeful in every way,
Feel free to whisper, sing or shout joyfully throughout the day:
Women rule!
If we band together in one clear voice,
We can crescendo together in a joyful noise.
The melody of women, who collaborate and work together,
Will send a resounding message that will last forever.
Women rule!
