FUNDING-GRANTS-MONEY-THE ASK

How can I fund my nonprofit, where do I turn? What resources are available? Who can help me write a grant? What is capacity building? This group will enable and empower you to find the resources and money to do it all--but you have to ASK.

Criteria

The Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund Awards were established to promote and enable wildlife conservation through partnerships with scientists, educators and organizations committed to preserving earth's biodiversity.

Our interests are in furthering the support of established conservation PROGRAMS -- particularly those long-term in nature -- that preferably have all of these components:

contain a strong in situ component (scientific field studies)

promote education, awareness and training in country (education programs

demonstrate a marked benefit to in country participants, habitats and species by working with local communities, regional/national NGO's or governments that directly impact the initiative

the principle investigator affirms that the welfare of the animals identified in this study is not compromised. Specifically, the principle investigator affirms that
Capture/restraint techniques minimize stress and the potential for physical injury or psychological harm;

Immobilization/anesthesia is done under the direct supervision of a veterinarian or other trained professional

Exposure to noxious stimuli and presumptive negative effects are minimized with administration of anesthetic and/or analgesic agents where appropriate
We also consider initiatives or PROJECTS that focus in any of the three areas described above and that may lead to a more established overall conservation program or support such a program.

Get started by logging in now and creating an application cover sheet.

Rapid Response Funding

Emergency funding is also provided in times of environmental or conservation crisis or need. Each year the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund sets aside dollars in a Rapid Response Fund to respond to crises. These awards are capped at $5,000 and can be applied for throughout the year. Use the link on the right menu for the application.

Conservation Hero Fund

If your organization has been funded by the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund before, you can nominate a conservation hero year round. The evaluation will take place in accordance with the normal grant cycle with decisions announced in June. For more information on the guidelines, the award and the application you can use the link on the right menu.

http://www.nationalgeographic.com/field/grants-programs/waitt-grants-application.html

The National Geographic Society/Waitt Grants Program funds projects that require venture capital, supporting exceptional projects while foregoing a time-consuming peer-review process. NGS/Waitt grants are able to fund "proof of concept" research for applicants at an earlier stage in their careers than other NGS grant programs. Special emphasis is placed on expedited grant processing and turnaround. The selection committee endeavors to have funding decisions made within eight weeks of application submission. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

Funding is not restricted to United States citizens. Applicants planning work in foreign countries should include at least one local collaborator as part of their research teams. The selection committee will not consider applications seeking support solely for laboratory work or archival research. While grants are awarded on the basis of scientific merit and exist independent of the National Geographic Society's other divisions, grant recipients are expected to provide National Geographic with rights of first refusal for popular publication of their findings.

This grant program does not pay educational tuition, nor does it offer scholarships or fellowships of any kind.

Eligibility
Applicants are not required to have advanced degrees to be eligible for funding, though they will be required to show a commensurate level of expertise and experience. Applicants must have an affiliation with an educational organization or other institution.

Previous grantees must first comply with all prior reporting and financial-accounting obligations before submitting applications for additional support.

Grant Amounts
National Geographic Society/Waitt grants are awarded on a rolling basis and range from U.S. $5,000-$15,000. There is no set quantity of grants awarded, but budget constraints keep the number to approximately a hundred per year.

Grant Restrictions
National Geographic Society grants may not be used for indirect costs, overhead, and other expenses not directly related to the project. Fringe benefits are also excluded, as are salaries.

Funds may not be used for travel to scientific/professional meetings or conferences, legal actions, land acquisition, endowments, construction of permanent field stations, or publishing research results. Tuition costs are not allowable.

Grant recipients are expected to provide the National Geographic Society with rights of first refusal for popular publication of their findings.

Obtaining an Application Form
Applying for a grant from the National Geographic Society/Waitt Grants program is a straightforward and quick process. Simply click on the link below to get started and within eight weeks, the selection committee will send a decision to the project director.

Capacity building refers to activities that improve an organization’s ability to achieve its mission or a person’s ability to define and realize his/her goals or to do his/her job more effectively.

For organizations, capacity building may relate to almost any aspect of its work: improved governance, leadership, mission and strategy, administration (including human resources, financial management, and legal matters), program development and implementation, fundraising and income generation, diversity, partnerships and collaboration, evaluation, advocacy and policy change, marketing, positioning, planning, etc. For individuals, capacity building may relate to leadership development, advocacy skills, training/speaking abilities, technical skills, organizing skills, and other areas of personal and professional development.

There is a large range of capacity building approaches--a continuum--that includes peer-to-peer learning, facilitated organizational development, training and academic study, research, publishing and grantmaking.

Capacity building also takes place across organizations, within communities, in whole geographic areas, within the nonprofit sector, and across the sectors. It involves individuals and groups of individuals, organizations, groups of organizations within the same field or sector, and organizations and actors from different fields and sectors.

Elizabeth:
You are a wealth of information. This information is invaluable and very current unlike some of the websites and books I have read that purport to be "up-to-date."

Congrats on your hard work being that pebble in a pond of water, watch for the ripples to grow!
