The White House Project

April's issue of Oprah's magazine devotes an entire page to The White House Project. Aunt Sam wants you-- your ideas, your passion, your leadership.

Win a three-day leadership training weekend hosted by O and The White House Project and sponsored by American Express.

Say you could learn the skills you need to become a leader-- what would you do? Start a business? An organization? Manage a corporation? Run for political office? Improve your neighborhood? Save the planet? If you've got a burning idea, a wild dream, a crazy hope, our contest Women Rule! O, The Oprah Magazine and The White House Project Leadership Training Program has your name written all over it.

For the first time ever, The White House Project, a national nonprofit group dedicated to getting women into positions of power, has created a three-day course especially for O readers who show leadership potential and have a vision for what to do with it. Thanks to American Express, the training--one weekend in June for 80 winners-- along with hotel accommodations and meals, will be free: winners have to cover only the costs of getting to and from the New York City area. Travel scholarships will be provided for up to 10 winners with demonstrated need.

What to expect: Women Rule! will "take your passion and turn it into real purpose in the world," says Marie Wilson, founder of The White House Project, which has successfully trained more than 5,000 women in the past ten years. The course will include lectures by outstanding women in business, philanthropy, and politics; coaching and workshops; and lots of good ol' girl networking. Each student will walk away with a plan for her original idea in hand. Part of what holds women back from leading, Wilson says, " is that mystery of How do you start something? When we show them what's involved and that they can do it, they realize that they already have a lot of the skills, or that they can develop them."

Minnesota state senator Patricia Torres Ray can attest to that. After more than 17 years at state and county agencies helping low-income families on issues like education and healthcare, she grew frustrated that elected officials weren't doing more. "I realized I needed to make a difference from a different place," she says. She decided to run for office, but, she says, " I didn't know how to frame my message, how to respond to questions, how to speak for myself. I had tremendous doubts that people would receive me well." With the help of The White House Project training, she won handily in 2006 and plans to run for reelection in 2009. "It's not until we take that initial step that re realize we have what it takes," Ray says. "So my advice is, even when you think you're not going to make it, try. You may be surprised at what you're able to accomplish."

Enter at www.thewhitehouseproject.org/womenrule between March 11 and April 11, 2008. You'll need to answer questions about yourself, describe your goal, and submit a biography or resume as well as a photo. Travel scholarship applicants will be asked about their finances. We're banking on you to make a difference (we'll follow up in future issues of O. The truth is, women still represent the minority in leadership roles-- from politics (16 percent of Congress) to business (3 percent of Fortune 500 CEOs) Says Marie Wilson, " I hope this leadership training is the best virus we ever contaminate people with."

No, but I am eagerly waiting. what is the date that they gave for contacting semi-finalists ( I think to ask more about your idea)? I can't seem to pull up the page that gave the details.

I know!!! I hate the waiting. I think the plan is for them to contact the winners by May 2 and announce by May 5th. No date was announced for semi-finalist interviews and reference contacts (that I found). With the announcement date around the corner I am thinking they should be contacting people soon. If anyone out there has heard anything please let us know ......Thanks! Good Luck Daphane and Sulma!

I was looking for the contest rules when I came upon this discussion! I'm so happy to find that I am not the only one eager to hear about reference contacts and semi-finalist interviews. Did you find that putting your dream out there made the possibilities of it more realistic? Best to everyone - in this endeavor and in all others!

Thanks for all of the updates-- so far have not found anyone that has heard a response of any kind, but they had an overwhelming number of applicants. Good luck to all of you and thanks for the kind wishes. Maybe we can schedule a time to do a group chat and discuss our ideas and share ways to get them off the ground. If anyone hears anything let us know....I hope we all can see our ideas take flight- the world would be a better place if they did.

Best wishes to you all!!!! I am also in the waiting cell...

I totally forgot the part about them contacting our references. Ahh. Wonder when that happens. I agree with Jem that just putting the idea out there made it feel possible. Even if I'm not selected as a finalist, I will most likely pursue the dreams I have because I have had many people encourage me when they hear about it. It's out of my hands for now, in terms of the contest, so I'm trying to be at peace with whatever happens. Best wishes for all the finalists. Go show 'em what you 'got' and lead with your feminine mind and heart!

Lynn:

I echo your sentiments! I am so excited to say the least about the what could be. I am truly encouraged by all of the women who are part of this network. I have such a different outlook on what is possible and have a greater respect for what is already in place! I have always been "about and for women". The WHP has shown me that there are no boundries. I wish all of us well, and hope to meet in June.

I am still recruiting!

Best regards,
Sharmina
